I raised three boys, owned multiple minivans followed by multiple SUV's. Minivans win hands down. AWD Crossover would be decent compromise in your weather. Make sure to spend the extra on the dealer-installed universal trailer hitch, that way you can use a trailer when you need to haul stuff. If you need AWD, consider maybe a Subaru or the like. We have a Forester, it has AWD, fits 5, has a huge trunk area, and gets like 27 MPG. Good luck!
