Perfect timing... it's the best time in years to buy an SUV b/c dealers are practically giving them away. My advice would be working multiple dealerships (with online sales people) and ask for written quotes. Then play the dealers off one another to give you the lowest price.

An AWD crossover, or a mid size SUV is probably the way to go if you're concerned about gas prices.

Congrats of being a new papa!

I understand your feelings about the minivan but if you are planning on multiple kids, put the minivan back on the list. I raised three boys, owned multiple minivans followed by multiple SUV's. Minivans win hands down. AWD Crossover would be decent compromise in your weather.

I have to go with David on the Suburu, they've really proven themselves here in New England...maybe even a crossover. Make sure to spend the extra on the dealer-installed universal trailer hitch, that way you can use a trailer when you need to haul stuff.
NOW ALL YOU GUYS NEED TO STOP GETTING PREGNANT BEFORE MY WIFE READS THIS!!!!!!

That said, congrats! Sounds like you and PT will have a lot to compare notes on soon!

I would avoid an SUV like the plague, as we have no idea what fuel will cost in the next 3, 5, 7 years. If you need AWD, consider maybe a Subaru or the like. We have a Forester, it has AWD, fits 5, has a huge trunk area, and gets like 27 MPG. Good luck!
