Fantastic overview!

I went through Blue Nile, fantastic customer service, great selection, and great prices. I sound like a PR person, but I've been very happy. Not to mention they have volumes of diamond education.

I also went with an ideal cut, but went with a smaller diamond w/ a higher clarity. If I were to go back and do it again, I would do larger diamond, less clarity. She loves it though and says it's the perfect size, so I guess I shouldn't dwell on it.

Anyway, for what it's worth, my order of importance for the 4 Cs:

Cut - absolutely go for the best you can afford
Color - G at a minimum
Carat - depends on your lady and your budget
Clarity - probably the least important, as long as you go for VS1 or above, it really doesn't matter much, only in price

Micah ended up going through a craftsman who buys used jewelry and melts it into other jewelry. Pretty exciting...still a good selection, but he had more freedom with design, so it matched a ring I wore on my right hand (which got crushed in something my right hand survived).

Looks like a useful guide, I talked about some of this stuff with Micah...there's just a lot to consider.

Thanks PT! I definitely think the Ideal cut is by far the easiest way to make sure it looks great. And you're right, so much for all that research now :)

Excellent write-up. Great choice on Cut. My wife gets comments all the time from random people like, "your ring is so sparkly!" Ideal is the way to go. I purchased off of bluenile.com

I can tell you did your research. Isn't it a shame you can't use that knowledge again in your life?! Well, I guess you did...you wrote this post. Way to go. Oh, and congrats!

Your #3 point on knowing your fiance is right on.
