[…] Hey, everyone checking out this page, FYI I am giving away two iPod nanos. (Ok now keed reading ) […]
I just came across your site when I did a search for extreme frugality.
I must say, your bog is the most thorough and useful I’ve come across lately. A lot of this I already know and do, but the reminder/refresher is always great. And your humor is not lost on me- your take on things is fresh.
Oh- the engagment ring- small and scratched is OK if it is, say, your great-grandmother’s ring that came over from Norway for instance. Or a simple ring (non-diamond OK-that tradition is a marketing myth anyway), that comes from a shop you visited together while courting. If a woman does not appreciate the romance in that, then look for another woman. If a woman is hung up on the ring, then watch out- you may in for a lifetime of keeping up with the Joneses.
My tip? I have two highly gifted children. We put together a very modest college savings for them. Our biggest investment in their college? Spending the money on a very small apartment in one of the best public high school districts in the country. Top ten percent in this district has a better shot at scholarship than valedvictorian anywhere else. My kids thrive here, and the support and opportunities are immense. They go to Broadway plays for free, and never have to pay fees for things like sports or science competitions.
Added tip: If you want an ivy league scholarship, live in Mississippi, Alaska, or Montana. The competition to represent these geographic locals is low indeed. Also, join crew if your school has it.
Now if only I could convince my daughter to play something like the Zither, instead of the flute.
Oh, and, I hope to nab one of the Ipods for the kiddies! It is something I would never buy them. They both work extremely hard, have limitless potential, and hearts of gold. Music maniacs too- my daughter hopes to be a conductor, and my son can’t get enough music, ever.
Kristine, on the point of the ring. I don’t think Jesse is trying to say you need to go out and buy a 3 carat ring. I think he means put some thought in to it, she is going to have it for a lifetime.
